A Throwback to my Most Watched Video: Rocks, Pebbles & Sand
As January comes to a close and we settle into the rhythm of 2025, it’s the perfect time to reflect on what truly matters. Last year, my most-watched video on YouTube was Rocks, Pebbles & Sand, and it resonated with so many of you. That’s why I’m sharing its core message again - because it’s as relevant as ever.
The Glass Jar of Productivity
Imagine your organization’s productivity as a glass jar, with space for three things: sand, pebbles, and rocks.
- Sand: The small, routine tasks - like fixing bugs or handling customer complaints.
- Pebbles: Incremental improvements - small projects that enhance your operations but don’t transform them.
- Rocks: The big, strategic initiatives that drive growth - entering a new market, launching a groundbreaking product, or restructuring your team.
The mistake many organizations make is filling their jar with sand and pebbles first, leaving no room for the rocks. Sound familiar?
The Key to Progress: Start with the Rocks
To truly move forward, start by prioritizing your rocks. These are the bold, strategic initiatives that define success for your organization. Place them in the jar first, then add the pebbles and let the sand fill the gaps.
As a leader, your role is to:
- Identify your rocks—Choose one to three key initiatives for the quarter or year.
- Communicate them relentlessly—Ensure your team stays focused on these priorities.
- Trust your team—Allow them to handle the sand and pebbles while you keep the rocks front and center.
When you lead with your rocks, everything else falls into place.
